Shri G.B. Patil (Head, Department of Gardens and Tree Authority, Nashik Municipal Corporation, Nashik, MH.) Shri P.P. Phalgune (Garden Inspector, Nashik Municipal Corporation, Nashik, MH.) Rose is an important crop for the commercial flower growers and nurseryen of Nashik regon. During Moghul reign Nasik was referred as 'Gulshanabad'. 'The City of Roses' The city region has retained the tradition, not only by nursing the roses but by commercially flowering them Gladiator is the most poplar variety number of other varieties are also grown for commercial production of cut roses. Besides production of cut roses there are many nurserymen engaged in production of ready to plant budded rose plants. Rose propogation has very good scope from commercial point of view as there is regular demand for rose bud-grafts. THE CONVENTIONAL METHOD The conventional method of rose propogation has several constraints especially for nursery production. For nurseryman, the usual method of budding is rather lengthy as first of all it requires to raise rootstocks. Cuttings from rose rootstocks are put for rooting during June to August i.e. during monsoon period when climatic factors are congenial to root formation and growth. Subsequently budding on rooted rootstocks is performed during the winter mmonths of December to February. The successful bud-grafts are required to be maintained till the on set of monsoon next year. Thus it takes nearly a year to produce a saleable rose plant in nurseries. The new technique developed is much time saviing and has several advantages over the conventional method. The new method for propogation of roses at NMC's nursery in nashik. THE NEW TECHNIQUE The new technique is a combination of two common propogation methods viz budding and layering instead of doing budding on rooted cuttings, budding in this case is performed on pencil-thick shoots of rootstock without detaching them from the original plant. Generally shoot growth is very profuse in case of rose rootstocks. On an average eight to ten shoots suitable for budding are found at a time on each well growth rootstock plant species. After doing budding and lavering is done simultaneously, three to six inches below the place of budding as per our own choice are requirement of low, medium or high budded plant. For air-layering usual method of removing bark in the form of ring and covering the operated area with most moss and tying with polyethlene sheet etc, is only recommended. In this technique all processes i.e, bud union, rooting and bud sprouting are taking place simultaneously and hence the method proves to be extremely time saving and economical. The plants are detached from the root stock plants three to four weeks after the operation and then put in polythylene bags or earthen pots for further growth on an average a period of four weeks is found sufficient to develop root system in the air-layer and by union sprouting also gets complete within that period.
