Centre to provide infrastructure for marketing of flowers

Bilaspur : The Centre will provide infrastructure for the marketing of floriculture and vegetables around Chandigarh, provided the union territory clears the proposal, Union Horticulture Commissioner M L Chowdhary said. ''The Centre wants to promote floriculture in Himachal and the country, while promoting the marketing of vegetables around Chandigarh,'' he told reporters after formally inaugurating a two-day seminar on floriculture and flower here yesterday. Chowdhary said the Centre would consider any feasible proposal submitted by any association or an individual for promoting floriculture in the country. He also announced to increase the green house area from 500 sq mts to 1000 sq mts as demanded by district flowers growers association. The Union Horticulture Commissioner also promised to provide funds for constructing water tanks for the purpose. Bilaspur district of the state was being recognized within the country and in the international market for growing ''quality flowers,'' he said. He visited green houses situated at Samoh, Zhandoota and Ghumarwin and interacted with the flower growers and listened to their problems. State horticulture Director R C Sharma, who was also present on the occasion, said the state had 407-hectare area under floriculture, which was increasing with more and more farmers were attracting towards floriculture. One hundred farmers of Bilaspur district had adopted horticulture as a full time avocation, he said. Sharma said carnation and Gladio variety of flowers grown in the district was fetching forty percent higher price in national market in comparison to Bangalore and Pune. Punjab horticulture director kulbir singh and national board of horticulture member Umed Singh were also present on the occasion.
