A meeting with International Floriculture Experts and Flower Growers of the State was held at Shimla today under the chairmanship of Shri J.P. Negi, Principal Secretary, Horticulture to explore the possibilities of export of flower particularly cornation from the State. Shri Negi stressed the need to produce quality flowers. He also said that cultivation of flowers have vast opportunity from lower to higher altitude and variety may be selected accordingly. He appreciated the efforts of Shri Navnish Sharma, Deputy General Manager, Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Govt. of India (APEDA) in bringing the flower producers and international buyers on one platform. He stressed the need to form Flower Producer Association at District, State and National levels and also take part in Horti fairs and exhibitions organized from time to time so they could be equipped with the latest marketing and quality of flowers. He said that cornation is not being exported till date. Shri Negi asked the growers to collect 17000 stems of cornation of different colours at one place so that they could be sent to international market for exposer of the material being produced in Himachal Pradeseh because it will give big boost to the economy of the floriculturists. Shri Negi said that floriculture experts from Neitherland Mr. Martnus Sockkia and Mr. Andre Bekker, Chief Quality Controller, Mr. Navnesh Sharma, Deputy General Manager, APEDA who are currently on tour to India. The team also visited Bilaspur and Mandi district of Himachal on 2nd December, 2006 to have on the spot assessment of the quality and quantum of the flowers of the area to offer technical advise on the spot regarding flower production variety selection and behaviour of the flower on the vase. Shri Navnesh Sharma, Deputy General Manager, Agriculture and Processed Food Produces Export Development Authority (APEDA) said that APEDA is playing key role after getting the encouragement in the Horti fair at Amstredan in Neitherland from 31 October to 3rd November 2006 where the flower from the State were displayed and the international buyers show keen interest in purchasing/ import of the flowers from Himachal. It is also intended to increase the basket of floriculture products currently being exported and adding yet another mile stone and directly adding to the econy of the people of the State. He said that APEDA is exploring flower Markets of Japans. Mr. Martina one of the expert explained in detail the process involved from cultivation, harvesting, packing growing and transportation to the airport for export to the European countries. He also interacted the flower growers and officers of the department. Earlier. Dr. C.R. Sharma, Director, Horticulture welcoming the Principal and floriculture experts said that State Government had sent two horticulturists and one official to International Horti Fair at Amsterdan in Neitherland for exposer in the international market. He said that Himachal is well know for horticulture and now the State is coming forward for growing of flowers.
