Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to tap the potential of floriculture to provide employment opportunities to youths, a state minister said. "The government has given priority to revive flori-based business which received a setback due to militancy. A number of steps have been initiated by the government to boost this sector," transport minister Mangat Ram Sharma said in a statement here yesterday. Kashmir produces good quality of gladioli, gerbera, peony and tulips while Jammu produces marigold besides gladioli and chrysanthemum, Sharma said. The potential sectors of floriculture include cutflower, bulb and seed production, wild flora development of dry flowers, pot plants of ornamental nurseries, aromatic and medicinal plants. The department will provide technical knowhow and other facilities to growers from cultivation to marketing and removal of constraints they face, Sharma said. The government will also help in expansion of area under floriculture, post harvest management, creation of infrastructure, promotion of floriculture as a viable enterprise and creation of more job opportunities. Sharma said that the department has earmarked Rs 24 crore for maintainance of parks and gardens in the state during the current financial year. The department has achieved 45 per cent of its target and most of the ongoing works are nearing completion, the minister added.
