Maharashtra is a progressive state in Horticulture. The area under floriculture in Maharashtra is 14, 929 hectares under open cultivation and 259 hectares in Green House. The flower production is 540 Million Stems per annum. Major flower under production are ROSES, CHRYSANTHEMUM, CARNATIONS, GERBERAS, MARIGOLD, JASMINE, ASTER, GLADIOUS, ZINNIA, LILLIES, COLADIOLORIS, TUBERROSE, ORCHID AND ANTHURIUM. The implementation of the Flower Auction house at Mumbai is taken up by Maharashtra Agro Industries Development Corporation Limited with the support of State Govt. and APEDA. The objective is to promote growth of the flower industry by improving flower farming practice, trading and processing, storage, logistics, packaging and to increase foreign exchange earnings through export including remunerative prices to growes. The modern flower auction market with stare of the art technology and internationals standards being setup at Goregaon - Mumbai is very near to city market, Internatioinal airport, highway and railway neetwork. 1. The infrastructure includes provision of cold storage, air conditioned premises, facilities for chopping, grading, aquafil, sleeving and bunching. 2. The computer system shall provide support to entire operation from receipt of flowers to despatch, all interlinked with reports and invoices generated automatically for effective control. This market will be developed on the concept of chain management including backward and forward linkages to improve the existing system. The project is based on likely arrival of 4 lakh stems / cut flowers per day. The market will link the growers through collection centre, information, feedback, extension and advisory services. It will provide facility for auctioning with complete transparency, warehousing and distribution to complete the linkages in the marketing chain. The infrastructure will provide careful handling of flowers to retain freshness and quality of flowers. The Buyers shall compete on price and sellers shall compete on quality. The auctioning will be on digital and electronic system & could be interlinked to other markets. The auction hous provides for two auctions for 56 buyers to bid and is expandable to 112 buyers.
